Man of Steel includes a subtle Watchmen Easter egg that everybody missed. Director Zack Snyder is well known for his attention to detail, and as a result every one of his movies fares very well under a rewatch. In recent months, he's been attempting to encourage his fanbase by conducting watch parties, and this week he chose to run through Man of Steel.

The experience was a delight for fans, with Snyder taking the time to discuss some of his favorite Easter eggs - including some that had gone previously unnoticed. One of his favorites, for example, was the shattered moon of Krypton, intended to foreshadow the presence of Doomsday in the nascent DCEU. Another, even more surprising, Easter egg is found in a brief scene featuring Alessandro Juliani, who played an officer helping Dr. Emil Hamilton look for a Kryptonian ship. Juliani is an alumni of the prequel series Smallville, where he played Hamilton himself.

It turns out there's another level of depth to that Easter egg, though. On close examination, the character's screensaver is an image of the surface of Mars. This was a deliberate reference to Snyder's Watchmen, where Juliani played the NASA scientist who spotted Dr. Manhattan on the surface of Mars.
